Become a prospector!
We all enjoy looking back on past experiences with a sense of satisfaction. It’s a good feeling to think, I did well — and others appreciated it too. There’s no regret, only a quiet sense of achievement. Behind those moments of success is usually some effort we made, some care we took. Maybe we were a little more thoughtful than usual. Perhaps we went out of our way to support someone — physically, emotionally, or just by being present.
At times, we may have shown restraint in the face of a difficult or sensitive situation. We might have risen above a personal limitation, stepping outside our usual habits for the sake of something greater. In doing so, we raised the bar — not just in our actions, but in our sense of self. It’s in these moments that we feel we're not just existing or passing time, but creating something — becoming a little more than we were before.
Yet, it’s easy to fall into the trap of waiting for some big change to appear on the horizon. While we sit and wait, we often overlook the small, everyday opportunities for growth. But it’s those quiet, incremental steps that shift our perspective and shape our lives. Stagnation sets in when we expect the world to change for us instead of making small, deliberate moves ourselves.
Adopting a passive or lazy attitude toward self-change often comes with side effects — a cluttered mind, nagging guilt, and the frustration of missed chances. Many of life’s opportunities are time-sensitive. Delay too long, and they slip by. The more we avoid effort and discomfort, the harder it becomes to act — inertia sets in.
If you truly want to live a more fulfilling life, begin with clarity. Start by making a list of what really matters to you — your values, goals, and personal priorities. Then identify the behaviours you'd like to improve. Create a strategy, however simple, and take small steps each day toward those goals. Keep track of your progress, not to judge yourself, but to stay conscious and engaged.
And most importantly, learn to recognise the small openings for change that are all around you. Become a prospector — always searching for those hidden gems of opportunity that, over time, lead to meaningful transformation.
